This map is centred on a point in Homa Bay County, in western Kenya, on the southern side of the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria. It carries the name Awendo but covers a different area from the sugar town in Migori County. The shoreline and inland hills of this part of South Nyanza shape the view.
Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake. Where it appears in the frame, it becomes a broad, still surface with an irregular shoreline of bays and points. Inland, the land rises gently into farmland and scattered homesteads.
