Bad Kreuznach lies on the River Nahe, in the wine country of Rhineland-Palatinate. The river splits in the town centre around an island, and the old town has grown up on both banks. On a map this creates a knot of short streets and crossings at the heart of the town, with the newer districts spreading more evenly outwards along the valley.
The town's best-known sight is the old Nahe bridge, whose houses are built directly on the piers above the water, one of very few such bridges still standing in Europe. South of the centre the valley narrows into the Salinental, where long graduation towers were built to trickle brine through brushwood. Salt springs are also the reason the town became a spa.
