Few towns have such a clear centrepiece as Bad Salzungen. The Burgsee, a lake almost in the middle of town, sits right beside the old centre, and the streets bend around its shore. To the south and west the Werra river winds through its valley, and the outer districts stretch along the roads that follow it.
The town's name and its history come from salt. Brine springs made it a salt-producing town and later a spa, and its long graduation works, timber walls where brine trickles over brushwood, are still part of the spa grounds. Bad Salzungen is in western Thuringia, close to the Rhön hills.
