Bagdogra lies at the northern edge of the plains in West Bengal, a short distance west of Siliguri. The feature that defines it most clearly on a map is its airport. The long, straight runway is shared with an Indian Air Force station and is the main air gateway for Darjeeling, Sikkim and the surrounding hill country.
Around the town, the map fills with large regular parcels of tea estates and military land. The residential streets are grouped along the main road. The land rises gently towards the foothills to the north, and rivers coming down from the hills cross the plain in wide, braided channels.
