On the map, the built-up area is squeezed into the available flat ground, with roads following contours, switching back on slopes and bending with the valleys. The result is an irregular, organic pattern.
In this part of Chongqing, hillsides are often farmed or wooded, and villages are scattered along ridges and streams. Roads connecting them wind for long distances to cover short straight-line distances.
