Bakal is a town in Chelyabinsk Oblast on the western slopes of the Southern Urals. Its history is tied to iron ore: the Bakal deposits have been mined for a long time and supplied the region's metallurgical industry. On a map, this shows in the terrain, where the town sits among forested ridges and the mining areas leave large, irregular shapes.
The streets do not follow a single grid. Residential districts are spread over the hillsides and valley floors, and roads wind between them, following the terrain. Rail lines and industrial roads connect the mining sites with the town, while dense forest covers much of the surrounding hills.
