Ballincollig sits on the River Lee in County Cork, a short distance west of Cork city. It started as a small village, grew around a military barracks, and expanded quickly in recent decades into one of the larger towns in the Cork area. That growth is visible in its map.
The town's main street runs east to west, parallel to the river. Housing estates spread north and south from it in curving roads and cul-de-sacs. A bypass skirts the town, and along the Lee lies the Ballincollig Regional Park, the site of the former Royal Gunpowder Mills, where old channels and paths wind beside the water.
