Bara Uchāna is in Jind district, in Haryana, part of the level agricultural plain northwest of Delhi. The land is so flat that roads, canals and field boundaries run almost perfectly straight. From above, the landscape looks more like a surveyed grid than countryside, with the town as a dense knot where several of those lines meet.
Irrigation has shaped this part of India, and the map reflects it. Canal channels cut across the farmland in long lines, and the fields between them are divided into rectangles of wheat and rice. The town has a tighter, less regular street pattern than the fields. Its lanes are narrower, and the buildings are packed close.
