Barakaldo lies on the left bank of the Nervión estuary, downstream from Bilbao, in a narrow strip of land between the water and the surrounding hills. The town centre is compact and steep, with streets climbing the slopes, while the flatter land by the estuary was once occupied by heavy industry.
For much of the twentieth century Barakaldo was a centre of Basque steel production, home to the Altos Hornos de Vizcaya works. As the industry declined, the riverside land was redeveloped, and it now holds the Bilbao Exhibition Centre, parks and new housing. The Cadagua River marks the boundary with Bilbao.
A Barakaldo map poster shows both eras side by side. The tight street pattern of the old town stands against the larger, newer blocks near the water, and the estuary curves along one side of the frame. It is a strong portrait of an industrial city reinventing itself.
