Barcelos lies in the Minho region of northern Portugal, on the north bank of the Cávado river. The historic centre sits on the higher ground above the water, and an old stone bridge links it to Barcelinhos on the opposite bank. From above, the river and bridge make an obvious starting point for the eye.
The town is famous as the home of the Rooster of Barcelos, the figure from a local legend that became one of Portugal's national symbols. It is also known for a large weekly market held in the broad main square, the Campo da República, which shows on the map as a big open space among the streets.
