Bardaskan lies in Razavi Khorasan province in north-eastern Iran, on the southern side of the province where cultivated land meets the edges of the central desert. From above, the town is a compact settlement of straight streets and walled plots, with a ring of orchards and fields that depend on careful irrigation in a dry climate.
The contrast between green and bare ground is the key to its map. Within the irrigated zone, fields form small, regular parcels crossed by tracks; beyond it, the plain opens out with only a few roads heading toward neighbouring towns such as Kashmar. The town's edges are sharp, since cultivation stops where the water does.
