Barhiya lies in Lakhisarai district in Bihar, on the flat Gangetic plain south of the river. The town is compact, with narrow streets and closely set houses forming a dense core, and on a map it appears as a small, intricate knot surrounded by wide open land. Roads lead out in several directions toward neighbouring villages and market towns.
The railway line running between Patna and Kiul passes through Barhiya, and its straight course gives the map a firm, ruled edge against the irregular town streets. Around the town the landscape belongs to the Tal, a low-lying area of the Ganges plain that floods during the monsoon and is farmed for pulses once the water recedes.
