Barishal sits in the delta of southern Bangladesh on the banks of the Kirtankhola River, and water shapes the city plan more than any road does. From above, the built-up area follows the curve of the river. Smaller channels cut inland, and many ponds lie scattered between the blocks like small rectangles of open space.
