Bārmer lies in the Thar Desert in western Rajasthan, not far from the border with Pakistan. On the map, the town sits at the foot of a rocky hill, with dense old streets near the centre and newer neighbourhoods spreading out across the flat, sandy plain. Roads radiate from the town toward villages scattered through the desert.
The area is known for its crafts, including block printing, embroidery and woodwork, and for the oil fields discovered in the district in the early 2000s. The railway line and highway connect the town to Jodhpur and the wider state, cutting across the open land in long straight lines.
