This Baroda is a small town in northern Madhya Pradesh, in Sheopur district near the border with Rajasthan. It should not be confused with the large city of Vadodara in Gujarat, which is also often called Baroda. From above, this is a modest place: a close-knit centre of lanes and houses, with roads heading out in several directions across flat countryside.
The layout is informal. Streets curve and meet at uneven angles, following old paths and plot boundaries. The built area stays compact and gives way quickly to fields, and field boundaries make a faint grid on the outskirts. In a line drawing, the dense centre and the open land around it make a simple contrast that is easy to read.
