Barra Velha lies on the northern coast of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, between the cities of Itajaí and Joinville. Water shapes the map on two sides: the open Atlantic along a long run of beach, and a lagoon behind the town. Streets fill the land in between, and the BR-101 highway runs further inland.
The town is known as a summer destination. Visitors come for its beaches and for the calm water of the lagoon, which is popular for swimming and fishing. Outside the holiday season it is a residential community, and it has grown steadily as people move to the coast from larger cities in the region.
