Barrancabermeja sits on the eastern bank of the Magdalena River in the Middle Magdalena region of Santander. It is widely known as Colombia's oil capital. The country's largest refinery, operated by Ecopetrol, occupies a large area beside the river, and the city grew around it. On a map, the industrial complex, the waterfront and the residential districts form three distinct textures.
The surrounding landscape is low and wet. Ciénagas, shallow lakes and marshes connected to the river system, press against the urban area and influence where streets can go. The Magdalena itself, wide and braided with islands, runs along the western edge and remains an important route for river traffic.
