Barrocas is a municipality in the interior of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil, in the dry country known as the sertão. The town is small and compact. On a map, a central cluster of streets and blocks sits at the meeting point of a few roads that lead out across open, sparsely settled land.
The landscape around it is characterised by caatinga scrub, pasture and small farms. From above it looks like a wide, soft field of irregular plots, dirt tracks and seasonal watercourses that fill only in the rainy months. Against this background the town's grid looks especially clear. It is a dense, contained shape with the countryside on every side.
