Batavia Map Poster & Print
Batavia lies in the Fox River valley, about forty miles west of Chicago, and is one of the oldest towns in the area. The river runs straight through the middle of it, with downtown streets on both banks, an island park and a riverwalk along the water. On a map the older neighbourhoods form a regular grid that bends slightly to follow the valley.
In the nineteenth century Batavia was known as the Windmill City for the windmills made in its factories, and several historic examples are displayed along the river. On its eastern edge lies Fermilab, the national particle physics laboratory, whose former Tevatron accelerator ring traces a vast circle in the landscape, surrounded by open prairie and ponds.
