Batu Kurau is a small town in the Larut, Matang and Selama district of Perak, in northwestern Peninsular Malaysia, north of Taiping. On the map, it appears as a modest cluster of streets at a road junction, with scattered villages and smallholdings spread out around it along narrow country roads.
The town lies near the foothills of the Bintang range, and forested high ground rises to the east. The land around it is used for rubber, oil palm and rice, and the map shows a mix of irregular plots, small streams and roads that follow the contours of the land.
