Bavly is a town in the south-east of Tatarstan, close to the border with Bashkortostan. The landscape is made of low, rolling hills and river valleys. The town sits in one of these valleys and follows the lie of the land rather than a single master plan. The district has been part of Tatarstan's oil industry since the middle of the twentieth century.
On a map Bavly shows several layers at once. Older streets of houses with gardens follow the valley floor and slopes. Blocks of mid-century apartment buildings form tighter, more geometric clusters. A railway line crosses the area, and roads lead out across the fields toward neighbouring towns in the oil region.
