Bay City is the county seat of Matagorda County on the Texas coastal plain, and its map looks the part. A regular grid of streets sits on almost perfectly flat ground, with the county courthouse square near the centre. Rail lines and state highways cross the town at angles, so the blocks around them break into odd wedges.
The Colorado River of Texas passes a short distance west of town on its way to Matagorda Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The surrounding country has long been rice farmland and oil and gas land, and the South Texas Project nuclear plant lies to the southwest. From the air, straight field edges and drainage lines stretch away in every direction.
