Bayombong is the capital of Nueva Vizcaya, in a broad upland valley of northern Luzon. On a map the town spreads across flat ground near the Magat River, with a compact centre of short streets around the plaza and the cathedral. Beyond it, roads and barangay lanes extend into rice fields, while mountains rise in the distance on nearly every side.
The Maharlika Highway, the main north-south road of Luzon, runs through the valley here on its way from the Dalton Pass toward Cagayan Valley, and much of Bayombong's commercial activity lines this route. The Magat River winds past the town, its wide bed a clear natural feature, while smaller creeks and irrigation lines cut across the fields around the edges.
Bayombong is a centre of government and education for the province, home to Saint Mary's University and the main campus of Nueva Vizcaya State University.
