Bayreuth lies in Upper Franconia in northern Bavaria, in the valley of the Red Main between the Fichtelgebirge and Franconian Switzerland. The historic centre is compact, with Maximilianstraße forming a long market street, and the map shows how the town spread outward from there along radiating roads into later residential districts.
The margraves, and above all Margravine Wilhelmine in the eighteenth century, gave the town much of its baroque character. The Margravial Opera House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands in the centre, the Hofgarten behind the New Palace forms a large green space close to the old streets, and east of town the Hermitage park spreads its paths and gardens.
To the north, on the Green Hill, stands the Festspielhaus that Richard Wagner built for his own operas, where the Bayreuth Festival has been held since 1876.
