Belaya Kalitva lies in Rostov oblast in southern Russia, at the point where the Kalitva river flows into the Seversky Donets. From above, the rivers shape everything. The town is divided into parts on different banks, linked by bridges. The streets follow the curves of the water, and the open steppe spreads around the edges.
The town has long been an industrial centre, known above all for its large aluminium metallurgical plant. It also has older roots in the Don Cossack lands and the coal-mining history of the eastern Donbas region. Its setting on the Donets, with sandy banks and river meanders, gives it a greener look than the surrounding steppe.
