Bermo is in Bokaro district of Jharkhand, in the coal-bearing Damodar valley. Its map does not look like a single compact town. Mining has shaped it, so there are separate residential colonies, industrial areas and open-cast workings spread across the landscape and linked by roads and rail lines.
The Damodar River runs through the region and gives the map a strong natural line among the more angular industrial shapes. Housing clusters sit near the mines and along the main roads. Between them lie large areas of worked ground and open land, which appear on the poster as broad, pale spaces.
