Bernau bei Berlin lies just beyond the northeastern edge of the German capital, in Brandenburg. On a map, the old town stands out as a compact oval of streets enclosed by a ring of green space and roads that follow the line of its medieval fortifications. Around this core, newer residential areas, rail lines and roads spread out, linking the town closely with Berlin.
Bernau keeps substantial parts of its medieval town wall, together with the Steintor gate, one of its best-known landmarks. On the edge of town stands the former ADGB trade union school, designed by Hannes Meyer and Hans Wittwer, which is part of the Bauhaus UNESCO World Heritage site. The town is also the terminus of Berlin's S2 S-Bahn line.
