Bethesda lies just beyond the northwest corner of Washington, D.C., in Montgomery County, Maryland. On a map, Wisconsin Avenue and Old Georgetown Road form its spine, meeting in a dense downtown of short blocks before spreading into curving residential streets. The Capital Beltway sweeps across the north, and green corridors along creeks and trails break up the suburban fabric.
The town is unincorporated, yet it has a strong identity, shaped in large part by two major institutions: the campus of the National Institutes of Health and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, which face each other across Wisconsin Avenue. Its name comes from an early nineteenth-century Presbyterian meeting house, a reminder of the rural crossroads that preceded the suburb.
