Bhadrachalam stands on the banks of the Godavari in the east of Telangana, where the river runs wide between forested hills. The town is known above all for the Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple, a major pilgrimage site associated with the seventeenth-century devotee Bhakta Ramadasu, whose story is still told and sung across the Telugu-speaking world.
On a map the river dominates. Its broad channel, with sandbanks that shift with the seasons, fills much of the frame, while the town's streets press toward the ghats and the temple precinct. A road bridge carries traffic across to the opposite bank, and the dense older core gives way to looser growth along the approach roads.
