Biritinga is a municipality in the north-east of Bahia, in the dry interior inland from Salvador and the Atlantic coast. Its urban centre is small and compact, a cluster of streets with roads leading out towards neighbouring towns and rural communities. From above, the town reads as a clear, concentrated knot set in a wide landscape of pasture and scattered farms.
Beyond the town, small rural settlements are linked by local and unpaved roads, which gives the wider map an open, airy quality, with thin lines crossing large empty spaces.
