Birpara is in the Alipurduar district of northern West Bengal, in the Dooars. This belt of plains lies at the foot of the Himalaya, close to the border with Bhutan. The town is closely tied to the tea industry, and much of the land around it is given over to estates.
On a map, the settlement is a compact cluster of streets near the main road and rail line. Beyond it, the tea gardens appear as large, orderly blocks divided by estate roads, with worker settlements and small factories scattered among them. Streams coming down from the hills cross the plain in shallow, braided channels.
