Bishopstoke lies on the east bank of the River Itchen, across the water from Eastleigh, in the Hampshire countryside north of Southampton. From above, the river and its water meadows form a green corridor on the western side, while the village climbs gently eastward in a mix of older lanes and later housing estates.
The Itchen here is known for its clear chalk-stream water and fishing, and the old Itchen Navigation, a canal that once carried barges between Winchester and Southampton, runs alongside it. The towpath is now a popular footpath, and on the map it follows the river as a thin parallel line.
A Bishopstoke map poster shows the difference between the soft, braided shapes of the river valley and the more regular curves of the residential streets. Bridges cross towards Eastleigh, linking the two, but the river remains the clearest feature in the design.
