Blansko stretches along the valley of the Svitava river north of Brno. From above, the town is long and narrow. The river, the railway and the main road run side by side through the valley floor, and neighbourhoods climb the slopes on either side wherever the terrain allows.
Just to the east, the forested plateau of the Moravian Karst begins. It is a protected landscape of caves, gorges and sinkholes, including the Macocha Abyss, and Blansko is the usual gateway to it. On a map, the forest reads as a large, almost road-free area that presses right up against the town's eastern edge.
A Blansko map poster captures a place shaped by its valley. You can see the chateau grounds near the centre, the housing estates on the hillsides and the long thread of the Svitava. The town's industrial past in ironworking and engineering still shows in the scale of some riverside blocks.
