Bloomington lies south of Minneapolis, and its southern edge is marked by the Minnesota River. On a map, the city follows a regular Midwestern grid of mile-square sections, with residential streets curving inside them. In the south, the grid stops at wooded bluffs that drop into a broad river valley of wetlands and backwater lakes.
Interstate 494 crosses the north of the city from east to west, with a band of offices, hotels and big-box stores along it. To the west, Normandale Lake and the Hyland Lake Park Reserve open large green and blue gaps in the suburban fabric, with trails and ski slopes on the hills.
The city is best known for the Mall of America, the largest shopping mall in the United States, built on the former site of Metropolitan Stadium. A Bloomington map poster shows the full layout, from the freeway corridor in the north to the river valley in the south.
