Boa Esperança is a town in the south of Minas Gerais, in a landscape of rolling hills, coffee farms and wide stretches of reservoir water. The urban area spreads across gently sloping ground. Its streets follow the terrain in long curves, and the centre around the main square is denser. Toward the edges the plan loosens into newer neighbourhoods and roads leading out into farmland.
Two features give the place its identity. The Furnas reservoir, created by damming the Rio Grande in the 1960s, spreads its irregular arms through the region, and on a map they appear as branching, fjord-like shapes. The Serra da Boa Esperança, the ridge near the town, lent its name to a well-known Brazilian song by Lamartine Babo from the 1930s.
