Bodegraven sits on the Oude Rijn in the Green Heart, the open landscape between the major Dutch cities. From above, the old core follows the river, with streets running along both banks. Beyond them, the land breaks into long, narrow polder plots divided by parallel ditches. The pattern is precise and striking in black and white.
The town has long been a centre of the cheese trade, and a cheese monument in the centre marks that history. The A12 motorway and the railway between Leiden and Utrecht pass close by, adding strong straight lines. Farms on the surrounding peat meadows still keep the landscape open.

Transport lines
The A12 and the Leiden–Utrecht railway cross the landscape in bold straight strokes. They contrast with the gentle curve of the river.
