Bossangoa lies in the northwest of the Central African Republic, beside the Ouham River. From above, the town spreads out along the water in a loose pattern of streets, with a denser centre and more scattered areas at the edges. A few main roads run out of town toward other regional centres, crossing a landscape of savanna, fields and wooded strips along the river.
Bossangoa is the capital of the Ouham prefecture and serves as a local centre for trade and services in the surrounding farming region. Agriculture, including cotton, has long been important in the area. The river shapes the town's layout and is part of daily life, providing water and fish and marking a natural edge to the settlement.
