Boston University has roots going back to 1839 and is one of the largest private universities in the United States. Its main Charles River Campus stretches along Commonwealth Avenue, west of Kenmore Square. Unlike an enclosed campus, it follows the street, with buildings lined up for well over a mile.
On a map, the campus is a thin ribbon. On one side, the Charles River runs broad and straight, edged by Storrow Drive and the riverside paths. On the other side, the Massachusetts Turnpike and railway tracks cut a long line. Commonwealth Avenue runs through the middle, with trolley tracks in its central median.
