Bouar lies on a plateau in the Nana-Mambéré prefecture of western Central African Republic, at a higher altitude than much of the country. The raised ground gives the area a milder climate and a landscape of rolling grassland and scattered woodland. On a map the town looks spread out, with main roads leaving toward other regions and toward the border with Cameroon.
The area is known well beyond the town for its megaliths: groups of standing stones on the surrounding plateau. They are among the most important archaeological sites in Central Africa. Their origins go back many centuries and are still being studied by researchers.
Within the town, streets form a loose network rather than a strict grid, with open land between districts.
