Bouguenais lies just southwest of Nantes, on the left bank of the Loire where the river begins to widen toward its estuary. On the map, the north edge of the commune is shaped by the river. Channels, islands and marshy banks run along it, and the town's streets spread back from the water onto higher ground.
The largest single shape in the commune is Nantes Atlantique Airport. Its long straight runway cuts through a landscape otherwise made of hedged fields and curving residential streets.
