Brāhmanbāria lies in eastern Bangladesh, close to the border with the Indian state of Tripura, on the low floodplain of the Titas River. From above, the town is a dense cluster of streets on slightly higher ground, surrounded by fields, ponds and channels that change with the seasons. During the monsoon, much of the surrounding land takes on the look of a lake.
The Titas, which branches from the Meghna, winds past the town and gave its name to a well-known novel and film, A River Called Titas. The district also holds the Titas gas field, one of the country's largest, and it is the birthplace of Ustad Alauddin Khan, one of the most influential figures in Hindustani classical music.
