Brasschaat sits just north of Antwerp, and on a map it stands out for how much green space it has. Large parks, woodland and former estate grounds break the built area into separate pieces, and villa streets wind between them without much of a grid. Main roads head south toward the city, while quieter lanes disappear into the trees on the northern and eastern sides.
A lot of that greenery goes back to the country estates that wealthy Antwerp families built here in the nineteenth century. The municipal park, with its ponds and old trees, was once one of those estates, and wooded areas such as the Peerdsbos add to the leafy feel. Brasschaat also has a long military connection, with a large army training ground that takes up a significant part of the area.
