Bridgend, Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr in Welsh, takes its name from its crossing over the River Ogmore, which runs north to south through the town centre. On a map the river divides the older streets into two sides, linked by a handful of bridges, including the old stone bridge that gives the town its name.
Around that historic core, housing estates extend in all directions, with curving cul-de-sacs typical of later growth. The M4 motorway runs along the north of the town, and the main railway line between Cardiff and Swansea passes through the centre, adding two long, strong lines to the composition.
