Bronte lies in the province of Catania in eastern Sicily, on the western flank of Mount Etna. The town is built on sloping ground, its streets following the contours of the volcano. From above, the built-up area is compact and irregular, surrounded by countryside of old lava flows, terraces and orchards.
Bronte is famous for its pistachios, grown on the rough volcanic soil around the town and prized across Italy. Its name also has an English connection: in 1799 Horatio Nelson was given the title Duke of Bronte, along with an estate nearby, and the Brontë family is thought to have taken their name from it.
