Bühl lies on the western edge of the Black Forest, where the flat Upper Rhine plain meets the first steep, wooded slopes. On a map, the town has a clear two-part structure: a compact centre and residential districts on the level ground, and roads winding east into the hills, where vineyards and forest take over and villages cling to the slopes.
The town is famous for the Bühler Zwetschge, an early-ripening plum that has been grown in the area for generations and gives its name to a local festival. The A5 autobahn runs past the town on the plain, and the heights above are known for the Bühlerhöhe hotel and the Schwarzwaldhochstraße scenic road.
