Buffalo Grove is a village in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, spanning the line between Lake and Cook counties. It grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century, and its street pattern reflects that era. From above, it is a quilt of subdivisions, each with its own loops, crescents and cul-de-sacs, joined by a grid of wider arterial roads.
A Buffalo Grove map poster shows how those neighbourhoods fit together. The main roads run in long straight lines at regular intervals, the old section lines of the Illinois prairie, while the residential streets inside them curl and branch. Buffalo Creek winds through the village, and parks, ponds and golf courses leave soft open areas between the houses.
A Metra station on the North Central Service links the village to downtown Chicago, and the community is known for its schools and park district. There is no historic downtown here; the character of the place lies in its planned residential layout. In black and white, the pattern of loops inside a square grid is surprisingly graphic.
