Buíque lies in the interior of Pernambuco, where the Agreste turns into the drier sertão. The town itself is compact, a modest grid of streets around a central square and church, with roads leaving in several directions across a sparse, open landscape. On a wider map, the terrain becomes more dramatic: plateaus, sandstone ridges and dry valleys with few settlements.
The municipality is best known as a gateway to the Catimbau National Park, a protected area of caatinga vegetation, sandstone formations and canyons. The park holds a large number of archaeological sites with prehistoric rock paintings, and it is considered one of the most important archaeological areas in northeastern Brazil. Visitors often arrive in Buíque before heading out on dirt roads.
