Bulandshahr lies in western Uttar Pradesh, southeast of Delhi, on the flat fertile land between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers known as the Doab. The name means "high city", a reference to the elevated ground on which the old town stands above the surrounding plain. The Kali river flows along its edge.
On the map, the historic centre is a dense network of narrow lanes and closely packed blocks. Newer districts spread out around it along the main roads, and those roads reach out across the plain toward neighbouring towns, carrying the city's traffic in several directions.
