Bulungu stands on the Kwilu River in the province of the same name, in the south-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The river gives the map its dominant feature, a broad, winding band of water that the town follows along its bank. Behind it, a loose network of streets and tracks spreads out into the surrounding country.
The town is one of the main settlements of Kwilu province and a local centre of trade, with goods and people moving along the river and the roads that connect it to the rest of the region. The landscape around it mixes open savanna with strips of forest along the watercourses.
