Burhānpur stands on the north bank of the Tapti River in southern Madhya Pradesh. The river's broad bed forms the southern edge of the map, while the old city rises above it in a dense, irregular pattern of lanes, markets and mosques within the lines of its historic walls.
Beyond the old core, newer neighbourhoods and roads spread outward, and the railway runs to the north. The Satpura hills lie nearby, and the fortress of Asirgarh stands on a hill north of the city, once considered a key to the Deccan.
Burhānpur was an important Mughal city. Mumtaz Mahal died here in 1631 and was first buried in the city before her body was moved to Agra. The Kundi Bhandara, an underground water system built in the Mughal period, still supplies water. A Burhānpur map poster shows the old city's shape beside the Tapti.
